School Renaming Suggestion Form & Renaming Updates

A live webinar was held as part of the September 17 PTA meeting to begin the process of soliciting new name suggestions.

The slides from the webinar are available here.

Here's a link to last week's PTA and renaming meeting. The renaming presentation begins at minute 30:00. This recording will remain available for at least a week.

Naming Suggestions Form

There is now a School Name Suggestion Form which is open and available for anyone who would like to suggest a new school name. School name suggestions will be accepted until 5:00 pm on Sunday, September 27. 2020.

Next week, class discussions may include ideas for new names, and your family may want to talk about ideas as well. Anyone is welcome to provide a suggestion - the form will be shared district-wide and city-wide as well.

Please be sure that the name suggestion comes with a description of the name, why it is a good fit for the school, and something about the person/people, place, thing or idea it represents...basically a one paragraph “Wikipedia” about the name!

Next Steps

The Naming Advisory Committee will review the suggested names, and winnow the list to a short list that will eventually result in 6 Top Names for further community learning and discussion during October and early November. There will be age-appropriate curriculum developed for each name so that children can participate in learning about the top names.

On Tuesday, November 10 there will be another PTA/School community meeting to talk about the Top 6 names, and focus groups and classroom discussions will take place in early November as well. The advisory committee will assemble feedback on the top names and discuss the community input with Superintendent Stephens before he makes a recommendation to the Board for their final decision at their meeting on Wednesday, December 2, 2020.

You can continue to stay up to date by checking the this website and/or the BUSD website, both of which also link to information about the current process as well as links to historical materials.
