Barry Fike

Barry Fike's first year of teaching was at Jefferson back in 1985-86. He went on to teach 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders for twelve more years in other Berkeley and Albany schools and also served as the Berkeley Federation of Teachers Union president for eight years. He rejoined Jefferson in 2007-08.

Barry, as his students call him, grew up in Berkeley in a family of teachers. His mother taught in the Berkeley schools, his grandmother taught in Berkeley preschools, and his wife used to be a Berkeley teacher too (she now teaches in Albany). He has a brother who is a teacher and another brother who is a college president. Barry is a Cal graduate and received his teaching credential from San Francisco State. Barry also has a masters degree in International Relations and speaks Spanish.

Barry loves to play basketball, take long distance bike rides, go on backpacking trips, and travel. In the evenings, he enjoys hanging out with his daughter and son who both attend Berkeley public schools.

What Parents Can Do At Home

Parental involvement in your child's education can mean:

  • Establish a quiet, safe place for your child to read at home.
  • Model independent reading yourself on a regular basis. That is, let your child see you reading.
  • Provide writing opportunities through journal writing, letter writing, and story writing.
  • Provide real life math experiences via money and cooking.
  • Create a supportive, non-pressurized atmosphere for your child to talk about their day.
