Jefferson’s Centennial Garden Project

The grading is done! The fence posts are in! The planter box posts arecemented!

Garden Work Party This Saturday, Dec 9th!

Saturday Dec 9th join us at the school anytime between 8 and 4 to build the planter boxes. We've got the site atmosphere dialed in now with music, BBQ, and smiles. We don't have a specific plan for including children at this particular event, but many families have been stopping by to see the action.

If possible, RSVP to please email or call Eric Wells. If you're not sure until the last minute, come on down anyway.

Volunteers Needed for the Garden Committee

Also, we are trying to expand the garden committee so we can tackle more ideas. If you can volunteer time for that, please email or call too. Examples of projects to tackle are:

  • the sundial
  • the mural
  • a documentary
  • kids' work parties
  • composting
  • curriculum resource center
  • arts
  • grants

If you can be added to the general garden volunteer list, then please email or call Eric Wells.

Information Available at School

The PTA, principal Betty, and the BUSD maintenance department partner Jean Pierre have been collaborating to get this project planned and approved. The location will be on the southeast corner of the school yard, right next to the handball court. There is an information board for the garden project in the main hallway at school. The garden plans are posted there, and the latest news will be added as we go.

This Garden is for the Children

The mission of the garden is to be a place where the children, with teacher facilitation, can plant and nurture edible plants. The design is intended for 20-30 school kids to simultaneously enter and use the garden together with their teacher. Parent Sharan Ikeda (4th grader Juzo) and teacher Sean Keller (4th grade room 204) are working on identifying the ways that the children and teachers will participate in the building of the garden. Let them know your good ideas!

There will be lots of ways that you can get involved in this historic event! If you have a construction related skill, such as carpentry, we’d especially love your contribution for the relevant work phases!
