Black History is Everyone's History
The month of February has been named Black History Month. However, the contributions of African Americans and their ancestors make a difference in our lives every day. Here are just a few examples of African Americans that changed the world:
- Louis Latimer (1848-1928) - Invented the carbon filament used in light bulbs.
- Jan Ernst Matzeliger (1852–1889) - Created a shoemaking machine that increased shoemaking speed by 900%.
- George Washington Carver (1860– 1943) - Developed peanut butter and 400 plant products.
- Bessie Blount (1914- ) - Made a device that allowed amputees to feed themselves.
- Daisy Bates (1914-1999) - Civil rights activist who operated the Arkansas State Press, a weekly African-American newspaper. The paper championed civil rights.
- Garrett Morgan (1877–1963) - Invented the gas mask and the first traffic signal.
- Dr. Patricia E. Bath (1949– ) - Pioneered a method of eye surgery that has helped many blind people to see.

- Otis Boykin (1920–1982) - Created the electronic control devices for guided missiles, IBM computers, and the pacemaker.
- Mae Jemison (1956- ) - First African American women astronaut on the Space Shuttle Endeavor in 1992, physician, scientist and educator.
- Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806) - Mathematician and astronomer- published the first almanac.
