Reading Recovery Instructor : Glory Styles
Ms. Styles is in her third year as the Reading Recovery teacher at Jefferson. As the Reading Recovery teacher she has 3 roles:
- One-on-one intensive reading/writing for first graders.
- Small group literacy for other groups according to what grade has the most need.
- Coaching teachers to meet their literacy goals.
She loves her work in which she helps lead children into a community of readers and writers.
Glory has had extensive teaching experience. Before teaching at Jefferson, she was the Reading Recovery teacher at Malcom X and Thousand Oaks for 1 year. Prior to that she worked in the Oakland school district for 4 years as a Reading Recovery teacher and taught first and second grade for 10 years. In addition, she taught ESL in Taiwan for 1 year and speaks some Mandarin.
She shares her N. Oakland home with her partner and her 12 year old daughter who attends Longfellow. Glory also has a 23 year old stepdaughter who will be graduating from Mills college this year. She has 2 cats, 1 dog and 3 chickens.
In early September she fell off a ladder and broke 2 vertebrae. But she is fortunate that she will fully recover from her accident. She does not let her accident get in the way of her commitment to her students and currently teaches while lying on a futon.
Outside of work Glory loves to play guitar and also sings in a Choir.
