After School Programs

One of the great things about Jefferson is all the things to do after school.

After School Learning Program

As part of Jefferson’s effort to close the achievement gaps among our students, several teachers have designed the After School Learning Program or ALP.

The Format for ALP

Teachers invite students who need extra learning time to participate in the program. ALP is funded with state and BSEP money allocated by our school’s governance committees and is free for students. The program will run in 6-week sessions, with the first session providing classes for students in grades 1-5 from November 13 to December 21. The four or five remaining sessions will include a class for kindergarten students. Students will need parents’ permission to participate in the program.

On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, participating students will have a snack and short recess, supervised by adult volunteers. Then, students will attend classes taught by Jefferson teachers with a 9 to 1 student/teacher ratio until 3:40 pm. Each class will also have 1 to 2 adult volunteers to assist the teacher. The program is not remedial. Instead, teachers will pre-teach grade-level mathematics or literacy (reading/writing) topics, providing a leg up on grade-level content for kids who can use extra learning time. These same skills and concepts will be taught in students’ regular classes later in the year. In ALP, students will be introduced to these concepts early and provided opportunities to work with them in fun and engaging activities with their peers, adult volunteers, and teachers.

The program will provide approximately 50 Jefferson students with additional chances to learn grade-level material, and is an important component of the school’s efforts to eliminate the achievement gap. To succeed, many volunteers and additional financial resources will be needed.

Volunteers Are Needed

ALP needs your support! We need volunteers to supervise a short recess and snack time, right after school. The snack/recess will last for 15-20 minutes. Students will report to classes from 2:40- 3:40.

We also need volunteers to assist students in the classes. Our goal is to have at least 2 adults for every 9 students. We want to offer our students the best support possible so they can be successful with the curriculum.

Volunteers can come in both days, or only one day per week.

Contact: Lisa Rossi - 2nd grade teacher in room 201, if you can volunteer. Email: or call school at 644-6299 and leave a message with Marie.

Voyager Rec-Ed

The Voyager program provides inexpensive, quality care from 1pm to 6pm each school day. Children are supervised coming to and from the PTA After-School classes and East Bay Center classes described above.

Morris Norisse, the genial director of the program, also works at Jefferson during the school year, and makes sure that the children receive the best care possible. Morris is assisted by several staff members. Kindergarten and First Grade students are cared for by Shabana who has been with the program for five years. Her gentle, loving care wins the hearts of all her charges.

Extended Day Care (EDC)

This district-run program provides free care for eligible families both before and after school. The program starts at 7:30 am and runs through 5:45pm. The program provides a safe and supervised before- and after-school educational, enrichment and recreational program for BUSD children in grades K-3. An adult child ratio of 14:1 is maintained at all times. For more information, contact the program at 644-6203.
