Earth Day Celebration!

The Green Team will be facilitating our annual Earth Day Extravaganza on Monday April 23, with fun eco-friendly yard activities during morning and afternoon recesses (see below for more details).  We are collecting no-longer-warn NECKTIES and small SUCCULENTS (smaller than 4 niches in diameter) for earthly projects.  Please place donations in the collection box outside the school office.  We are also seeking PARENT/GUARDIAN VOLUNTEERS to help out with the yard activities–please sign up here: EARTH DAY SIGNUP
OR contact Lori Hess at loribhess@gmail.com
Here are some more details about Jefferson’s Earth Day celebration on Monday, April 23:
Walk and Roll to school/morning coffee: Celebrate Earth Day and reduce pollution by Walking or Rolling to school!  Leave your car at home, leave extra time to park a few blocks away, or carpool with friends.  Parents, please stay for a few minutes to join us for coffee (bring your own mug to reduce waste!) and participate in creating an Earth Day mural.
Earth Day activities: Join the Green Team at morning and afternoon recess for eco-friendly activities on the yard including recycle relay race, biodegradable bird feeders, repurposed necktie water bottle holders, upcycled cereal bowl planting, and our earth day mural!
Zero waste lunch: If you pack a lunch, make it zero waste for Earth Day!  Pack food in reusable containers, use a cloth napkin and reusable utensils, and put it all in a reusable lunch bag/box.

If you are looking for other ways to be inspired and get involved on Earth Day, here are two options:
Shoreline cleanup:
Join other Jefferson families at the Shorebird Park Nature Center at the Berkeley Marina at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday 4/21 to learn about the impact plastic is having on our environment and help clean up our shoreline. For more info and to preregister, go to http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/shorelinecleanup/ or call 510-981-6720.
Berkeley Earth Day: Berkeley Earth Day, a free event at the David Brower Center on Sunday 4/22, brings the Bay Area environmental community together to celebrate our vision for a sustainable future. http://berkeleyearthday.org/

Bike Rodeo Event Wednesday, April 18 at JAZ and BEARS:  Begins at 1:40 pm on the Jefferson Yard

Free Kids Bike Rodeo Safety Class:  Wednesday, April 18th
For all after-school students in Grades 2nd-5th: Learn how to ride a bike safely, start and stop properly, avoid hazards, yielding, ride the obstacle course and more!
Bikes and helmets provided.  First group available for students who do not participate in after-school at Jefferson with parental supervision.

Next Kids Care! Activity Wednesday, April 21

PLEASE NOTE: The second part of this activity is limited to 18 volunteers. PLEASE RSVP to amylberlin@gmail.com if you plan to attend.

Please join Kids Care! for our next community service activity on April 21. We will meet at Epworth United Methodist Church, at 1953 Hopkins Street, at 2 p.m. to assemble care packages to distribute at Berkeley Pines Care Center.  We will then drive to Berkeley Pines (2223 Ashby Avenue) to deliver our care packages and visit with patients at this skilled nursing facility. The facility has asked that we limit the size of our group to 18.

In addition to donating items to the care packages (see below for care package details), please consider bringing books to read or card games to play with the people we will be visiting.  Young musicians are also encouraged to bring their musical instruments to play.

To help with care packages, participants are asked to bring items from the list below according to last name.  All are welcome to assist with assembling the kits, even if you are unable to bring donated items.

magnifying glass

hand lotion

Come and win beautiful artwork made by your kids through the raffle. This is a family event so we hope to see all Jefferson families out to enjoy a night of art, food and music! $10 per family suggested, but pay what you can. All money raised will go to support important PTA activities.

Sign Up with Your Grade (or Anytime) to Help Sell Raffle Tickets!

This is a fun way to get together with friends and classmates to sell more raffle tickets to support Jefferson school. Shifts are approximately 90 minutes and all supplies will be provided for you.

You can sign up online: http://bit.ly/2018JeffersonRaffle or email Mara Mahmood mara.mahmood@gmail.com

If you can’t sign up for a shift for this Thursday, there are future dates available.  More information about the raffle is below:

Every year at Jefferson’s Mayfair celebration (Saturday, May 5th) there is a raffle for great prizes, including an iPad mini, guest passes to the Bay Area Discovery Museum, and other tickets and gift certificates for local attractions, eateries, and businesses. Raffle ticket sales bring in close to $15,000 to help support everything from field trips to PE coaches at Jefferson!

There are prizes for top ticket sellers and the class with the greatest participation (even one ticket counts!!) will earn a pizza party!

Thank you for supporting Jefferson school!

Mornings at Jefferson

Unless it is raining, please remind your kids to stay on the yard and line up when the bell rings (1st bell at 8:12, 2nd bell at 8:15). The teachers are prepping for the day and supervision is provided on the yard. Thanks for supporting us in this.

Library

The Jefferson Library is looking for creative parent volunteers to help with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities during lunch recess. If you have some time to spare, please contact Mrs. Williams at adoriawilliams@berkeley.net.

The lunch recess schedule is: 11:30 to 11:50 pm (Grades K-1), 12:00 to 12:20 (Grades 2-3), and 12:20 to 12:40 (Grades 4-5).

Our School Cares Request – Grocery Cards

Jefferson has a strong tradition of supporting each other in challenging times.  Part of how we do that is that we keep gift cards (i.e., Safeway, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Target) on hand for emergency situations.  Our supply is low so we are putting out a call to the school community.  Can you donate a gift card?  Please drop it by the office and tell Courtney it is for the Our School Cares folder.  You can also order cards online at Whole Foods (which is near the family homeless shelter) or Target and have them mailed to the school: Attention Lily Howell, 1400 Ada St, Berkeley, CA 94702.

Thanks! Your Our School Cares Team

Talent Show Coordinator Wanted

We have a talent show where the 3rd-5th graders perform at the end of May or beginning of June. We are looking for 1 or 2 folks to run auditions at lunches, prepare a program and manage stage hands (5th graders). The show is MC’ed by students. Please let Mary know atmarycazden@berkeley.net if you are interested.  It is a really fun job!
